The candidate to the Senate for the Mayagüez Aguadilla district, Ada García Montes, for the Popular Democratic Party (PPD), questioned the reasons why there is no reopening plan for the Rafael Hernández de Aguadilla airport, a facility that has been closed since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“On July 17, Mr. Pizá (Joel Pizá Batiz, Executive Director of the Ports Authority) reported that the reopening of the western airport will not take place until next year and the public questioning that we are doing is on the specific plan for said reopening. Saying that the reopening will be done ‘next year’, without a specific date, shows that there is no interest, ”said the educator and cultural leader.
“The west also needs its airport in operation, as it is done in other parts of the world, with the appropriate health controls. That the example of the Luis Muñoz Marín international airport be used so that they plan the reopening well. There they have not taken the appropriate protocols and using the excuse of Covid-19 to leave us deprived of that service, evidence that there is a clear discrimination against western Puerto Rico, ”added García Montes.
The popular candidate pointed out that in the plan that the Ports Authority works, it should be detailed how the protection of the health of the workers of said facilities will be “and that there is coordination with the other sectors of the tourist ecosystem in the area, so that everyone knows the details. Communication is essential, but before that, clear and effective planning, “concluded the popular candidate.
