The mayor of Cayey, Rolando Ortiz Velázquez, announced an intense promotional campaign for his citizens to complete the 2020 Census form, which is of great importance for planning the country for the next ten years.
“We are working together with the Census staff on the Island and we have identified that the communities that need additional assistance are Jájome Alto, Jájome Bajo and Beatriz. We have already established the days, times and places to carry out the process with the Census officials, complying with the health provisions for the Covid-19 pandemic”, The mayor detailed in writing.
The established days are the following:
-Thursday, August 27, 2020 in Jájome Bajo at the Community Center from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
-Friday, August 28, 2020 at Beatriz at the Parcelas Viejas Court from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Ortiz Velázquez, also former president of the Puerto Rico Mayors Association, added that last week the group made up of 45 municipalities made an urgent call to the population to comply with the obligation to fill out the 2020 Census, in view of the low participation that has been registered at the moment. “The biggest consequence for Puerto Rico is that up to $ 55 billion in federal funds could be lost in a decade, if compliance is not increased rapidly.”
Said federal funds would be destined for health, housing, education and transportation projects, among other direct services to Puerto Rican communities. “Filling out the 2020 Census form is quick and easy, where personal information is completely confidential and protected by federal law. In fact, the Census does not even ask for personal information such as social security number or any bank information, ”added Ortiz Velázquez.
2020 Census officials indicated that households in Puerto Rico can respond in various ways, either by filling out the questionnaire and mailing it, responding online at 2020census.gov/es, or by calling 844-426-2020 in Spanish and 844-418-2020 in English.
