MAYAGÜEZ New photos of the so-called Utopia Plain on the planet Mars were captured by the Chinese Tianwen-1 module and the Zhurong rover, reported the National Space Administration of China.
China’s robotic mission landed on the neighboring planet on May 14.
“During the final phase of the descent, the spacecraft did it in a similar way to how the Viking ships descended in 1976, Phoenix in 2008 and Insight in 2018 (from NASA), that is, using descent rockets or retro-propellants until they reached the surface. ”Explained the Caribbean Astronomy Society (SAC) in a written communication.
The educational entity explained that in one of the images something white is observed at a distance next to an object, and clarified it is the parachute and the upper shield from which the ship was separated during part of the descent.
The Zhurong solar robotic cart or “rover” is somewhat similar to Spirit and Opportunity. This carries several cameras as well as a spectrometer and a radar to analyze the subsoil, among some of its instruments.
The spacecraft had been launched from China on July 23, 2020 and landed in an area between the places where Perseverance, Viking-2 and Insight landed.
China became the second nation to successfully land and function on the surface of Mars in addition to the United States, as attempts by the then Soviet Union were unsuccessful or partially successful.
There are now three active rovers on the neighboring planet, as Zhurong joins NASA’s Curiosity and Perseverance rovers.
