Before the beginning of the influenza season in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the call of health workers to the public is growing to go to get vaccinated against influenza, a contagious respiratory disease that infects the nose, throat and in some cases the lungs.
Precisely, VOCES Coalition for Immunization and Health Promotion together with its Advisory Committee on Adult Vaccination (CAVA), the National Guard of Puerto Rico and the Department of Health (DS) announced today the implementation of community vaccinations in 10 municipalities under the name Servi-Flu #PRYATETOCA, the new modality of the “Flumarathon” initiative.
According to data from the Influenza Surveillance system, from July 1 to the end of September, 128 cases of influenza, 16 hospitalized patients and zero fatalities had been reported in Puerto Rico. However, from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020, more than 20,000 cases, four deaths, and over 1,000 hospitalizations were reported. In contrast, from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019, more than 50,000 cases of influenza, 2,000 hospitalizations, and three fatalities were reported.
As for Covid-19 cases, Puerto Rico today has 25,635 confirmed cases, 26,102 probable cases and 696 deaths, according to the data included in the daily report of the Department of Health (DS). In addition, there are 322 hospitalized, of which 61 are in the intensive unit and 33 are connected to an artificial respirator. It should be noted that these statistics include the case of a minor who remains confined in the intensive care unit and connected to a ventilator.
“(Covid-19 and influenza) is a fatal combination. It puts the immune system to fight two infectious agents at the same time and it has also been pointed out that the evaluation of the death certificates made by the Demographic Registry indicates that almost 20% of the deaths evaluated by Covid-19 also had influenza or pneumonia in the same diagnosis, ”said the Undersecretary of Health, Iris Cardona.
According to the statistics presented, the municipalities with the highest incidence of influenza cases are: Fajardo, Ceiba and San Germán. “We have the influenza virus circulating in the community and we have not entered the peak of the season, but that is precisely what we want to avoid,” Cardona said at a press conference.
