Contrast Mammography Advanced technology for accurate diagnosis of breast cancer

SAN JUAN – An estimated 2,183 women are diagnosed annually in Puerto Rico with invasive breast cancer, according to statistics from the Central Cancer Registry of Puerto Rico. Early detection is key in the fight against this disease. The Hospital of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Puerto Rico (HCCCUPR) has the latest technology in the field of digital radiology. Currently it is the only place in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean where contrast mammograms are performed.

The HCCCUPR Women’s Center is focused entirely on women’s health and has the most modern detection tests such as: contrast mammography, tomosynthesis, sonomamography, MRI, biopsies and radiological consultations. “Mammography with contrast is one of the most modern technologies that offers a better visualization of breast tissue to identify any lesion in a more precise way” indicated Dr. Yania López, the only radiologist in Puerto Rico trained to interpret this type of study .

“Studies have shown that women who complete their annual screening mammogram after 40 years of age not only reduce their risk of death from breast cancer, but are less likely to require more aggressive treatments upon diagnosis. of breast cancer, ”emphasized radiologist López, who has a subspecialty at the Mayo Clinic.

As part of the services for women, the UPR Comprehensive Cancer Center Hospital, has a group of renowned doctors; such as: hematologists oncologists, specialists and subspecialists in the breast, surgeons oncologists, gynecologists oncologists who attend the Multidisciplinary Clinics on specific days and hours. “The advantage of this service is that the patient has at their disposal all the technology and medical services they need in one place; from screening tests early, diagnoses and treatments with the aim of reducing the gap to cancer ”highlighted Dr. Lourdes Feliciano, clinical director of the Hospital of the CCCUPR.
