Covid-19 claims 5 more lives in Puerto Rico – Caribbean Business


SAN JUAN – The Puerto Rico Health Department's Covid-19 report daily report included five additional deaths Wednesday caused by the disease, along with 77 confirmed and 28 probable infection cases.

Three of the newly deceased tested positive for the novel coronavirus. One was an 87-year-old man from the Mayagüez region, according to the Health Department; another was a 60-year-old man from the Caguas region, and the other was a 68-year-old woman from the Ponce region. The other two registered deaths that are thought to have been caused by Covid-19 are of two women from the metropolitan region who were aged 70 and 77.

To date, Puerto Rico has recorded 84 deaths confirmed to have been caused by Covid -19 and 101 as probably caused by the disease, for a total 185 since March.

Cases are registered as probable when they meet clinical or vital records criteria and epidemiological evidence but have not been tested for Covid-19 or only meet presumptive laboratory evidence for the disease.

The Health Department says it has confirmed — through diagnostic, or PCR tests — 4,330 cases to date, of which 2,201 are women and 2,129 are men.

Meanwhile, the number of probable cases on the island is 8,708 to date, or 4,724 women and 3,984 men.
