Covid-19 deaths increasing | government

The spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) continues at an increasing rate in Puerto Rico, with at least a cumulative of 17,248 confirmed cases and 19,031 probable reported cases, data that adds to the increase in the number of deaths, which rose to 512 yesterday after the Department of Health report 30 deaths in the last two days.

According to Health reports, these 30 deaths – which are divided into 18 reported last Tuesday and 12 yesterday – are confirmed, which means that people died with one or more positive molecular tests for Covid-19. It is the first time during the pandemic that such a high death toll has been reported on two consecutive days.

“A high number of deaths was expected from the cases that were reported in August and usually the peak of 400 cases in August. In deaths are seen two weeks after those peaks. So those deaths were to be expected, but one thing is for one to expect them in theory and another is to see it, which is already in the numbers, ”said the president of the College of Surgeons, Víctor Ramos.

He pointed out that the number of deaths is of concern and stressed that it is important to follow the recommendations for the use of a mask that covers the nose and mouth, social distancing and hand washing. “Now it is more critical, in the context of community transmission. You can get infected anywhere “, Ramos added to THE SPOKESMAN.

Instead, biostatistician Ángel Suárez Rivera said that many factors must be evaluated when estimating deaths. “You have to see the health care once the patient arrives… I don’t dare to attribute it. I would like to see the approach of the hospital, in terms of how they are handling this situation, because if there is good management it is very likely that they will not die, “said Suárez Rivera.

As of yesterday, Puerto Rico had 349 confirmed deaths and 163 probable deaths. Meanwhile, there were 421 hospitalized. Of these, 69 adult patients and one pediatric patient were confined to the intensive care unit. There were also 57 connected to an artificial respirator, according to data published in the Health dashboard.

Regarding deaths, Salud reported that the change in the number should not be interpreted as having occurred in the last 24 hours. The agency also pointed out that the death report may vary, to the extent that the processes of registration and codification of the causes of death are carried out, which can take several days.

“It is important to remember that any death recorded after the report is issued will be reflected in subsequent reports,” he said.
