San Juan – United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported that it seized 96 pounds (44 kilos) of cocaine on Tuesday inside a cooling fan of a container aboard the M / V GH Pamperom cargo ship that arrived at the port of San Juan from from Río Haina, in the Dominican Republic.
The estimated value of the seized cocaine is $ 1.3 million.
“Smugglers continue to find ways to hide their illicit drug shipments in the international supply chain,” said Noel De Jesus, Acting Associate Director of Field Operations for Border Security in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
“The experience of our officers, along with the use of all available tools, resulted in the detection of these narcotics. Our communities can feel safer knowing that the men and women of CBP are securing their borders. “
On April 6, a CBP Smuggling Control Team boarded the vessel for a routine inspection of the containers using non-intrusive inspection technology.
A container was further inspected by opening the container’s cooling vent access panel, where CBP officers discovered 41 brick-shaped objects.
The bricks tested positive for the properties of cocaine.
