San Juan – The designated secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs (DACO), Edan Rivera Rodríguez, alerted the public on Monday to be aware of scams perpetrated over the phone by unscrupulous people posing as employees of banking institutions, government employees or using any excuse to achieve its mission.
“We heard of a person who was scammed over the phone. Through a telephone call, a man posed as an employee of the Electric Power Authority and threatened to cut the electricity service for non-payment. The consumer provided him with the credit card and was scammed out of nearly $ 20,000. Faced with such a scenario, people get confused and fall into the trap of scammers, ”Rivera Rodríguez said in written statements.
The official recommended that consumers in a similar situation request personal information by phone to hang up the call and that it is the consumer himself who generates the phone call to the official number of the agency or company.
Likewise, it is recommended not to respond or share personal data through email to avoid fraud or identity theft.
He mentioned another publicly reported case was that of a woman scammed through the ath mobile application. The scammer asked him over the phone to validate the code to restore the account, which allowed him to access it and withdraw over $ 2,000.
