PONCE – The secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC), Manuel Laboy Rivera awarded $ 200,000 to the Ponce Research Institute on Tuesday, through the signing of a contract to continue supporting the scientific development of students in the southern zone from Puerto Rico.
“This new contract represents the third disbursement to the Research Institute located in the Ciudad Señorial and with it we comply with the commitment we made at the beginning of this four-year period to support the scientific development of young people in the southern part of Puerto Rico. We are happy that intermediate, superior and university level students can continue their scientific research work and fulfill their goals and desires to contribute new knowledge to the welfare of humanity. We firmly believe in them and in their teachers, we trust that many achievements will come out of the Institute, ”Laboy Rivera said in written communication.
“This initiative complies with the programmatic commitment of our administration to provide the necessary resources to promote scientific research and to help youth in their development and learning,” said Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced.
In 2018, the DDEC signed an agreement with the Ponce Institute of Sciences and the Municipality of Ponce, in which it agreed to disburse up to a maximum of $ 763,000 over a period of three years, from the Special Fund for Economic Development. (FEDE). The first disbursement was $ 300,000. The second for $ 263,000 and this third for $ 200,000 for a total of $ 763,000. The funds are used for professional services, major laboratory equipment, minor laboratory equipment and instruments, computers and related equipment, infrastructure materials and perishable materials essential for daily activities (serological pipettes, bio-waste bags, means to feed cells , gloves, bovine serum, gowns and disposable tips, among others).
For her part, Dr. Edu Suárez, Executive Director of the Ponce Institute, reported that to date 5,000 students from intermediate, higher and university levels from the Municipality of Ponce and the southern region have participated in activities at the center.
“When we have the opportunity to help the development of Puerto Rico and of our youth, from wherever we are, our responsibility is to do so. Young people need our support to empower themselves with their own talents, develop them and trust themselves to achieve what they set out to do. That has been our north, through the Youth Development Program (PDJ). They have undergone many trials in the past years, which have strengthened them, and helped them innovate and start early. Our island can fully trust them ”, added the secretary of the DDEC.
According to the director of the PDJ, Roberto Carlos Pagán Santiago, the funds are disbursed according to availability, to the evidence on the good performance of the Ponce Institute of Sciences, to the presentation of statistics to support the School to Business Program and the annual presentation of a proposal to the Board of Directors of the Industrial Development Company (PRIDCO). The Institute, as of this third year, also had to identify the funds to subsidize its activities and be self-sustaining as of the fourth year.
“We celebrate that before the end of the year, we have concluded and fulfilled the contract with the Ponce Institute of Sciences for the past three years and contributed to the scientific education of so many students.
