SAN JUAN – The secretary of the Department of the Family (DF), Dr. Carmen Ana González Magaz, together with the administrator of the Administration of Families and Children (ADFAN), Glenda Gerena Ríos, announced on Tuesday the availability of 2.2 million dollars for financial assistance to youth in the agency’s custody and graduates of the foster care program in support of their needs in the face of the COVID-19 emergency.
The funds are available after the approval of the “Supporting Foster Youth and Families through the Pandemic Act”, which grants ADFAN the resources for this assistance, both to active youth and graduates of foster care, up to the age of 27 , depending on the availability of funds.
“These resources give young people the opportunity to supplement their needs in times of great challenges in their development of capacities and experiences to face an independent adult life. We are their support network and we want them to know that they have that support, ”said the Secretary of the Family in written communication.
The head of the DF also added that, “eligible youth will receive immediate help to meet their pressing needs. After the evaluation, they could receive further assistance, according to their need. For this reason, we continue to maximize the use of federal funds that are available to help the most vulnerable; that is our task and the commitment of Governor Pedro Pierluisi ”.
Along the same lines, ADFAN administrator Glenda Gerena explained that “this aid is aimed at meeting the urgent expenses of young people as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This Law allows to assist you in your housing, transportation, technology and internet access expenses, among others ”.
“It is important to mention that all participants who have graduated during the period that includes January 27, 2020 until April 30, 2021, could be eligible to receive the aid,” Gerena stressed, since she added that “all young people from 27 years or less and who has been discharged from foster care can request help to be evaluated ”.
