San Juan – The secretary of the Department of the Family (DF), Orlando López, together with the administrator of ADSEF, Alberto Fradera, reported on Thursday that the categories A (Aged), B (Blind) and D (Disabled) of the Program of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) will see an increase in benefits totaling $ 6.4 million annually.

“With this increase in benefits we do justice to this population sector that has limited resources and many of them have no income or only receive social security benefits. 37,697 families are being impacted, with more than 45 thousand eligible members who as of today, and every first day of the month, will have more resources to attend to their basic needs, ”said the Secretary of the Family in written communication.

This increase supports 45,546 participants, who have not had an adjustment in their benefits in 20 years.

The increase is aimed at older adults, people with disabilities and people who are legally blind. Payments are received today, October 1st, through the Unique Card, so participants do not have to carry out any procedure with the agency.

Category A (Aged) and D (Disabled) benefits go up to $ 80 per month and Category B (Blind) to $ 128 in monthly benefits. Previously, all of these categories received a fixed monthly benefit of $ 64.

For his part, the ADSEF administrator pointed out that, “with this increase in benefits, we meet the objective of increasing assistance to all participants of the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program, who are the families with the lowest income registered in the agency. This additional assistance is added to the increase in benefits received since last May, TANF families who have minors in their family nucleus ”.

The new benefit levels were approved by the federal government after the State Plan of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families TANF program was amended, which is administered by the Administration for Socioeconomic Development of the Family in consultation with the Administration for Children and Families (ACF).

Fradera Vázquez indicated that the benefits of the TANF program are available to all eligible families and can be requested through the online services portal of the Government of Puerto Rico, accessing www.pr.gov, on the TANF Eligibility Request button or through 311.

“It is our commitment to continue looking for alternatives, not only for benefits, but also for opportunities for those of productive ages to move towards self-sufficiency, while protecting and supporting those who, due to their age or conditions, do not have the resources to seek their well-being, ”he said.

The TANF program makes annual disbursements that exceed

50 million dollars to 37,697 eligible participating families as of September 2020. These participants are evaluated in five categories: A (Aged), B (Blind), Category C (Children), D (Disable), G (General) and T ( Tutor). Due to their low income, these families are also eligible for the Nutrition Assistance Program (PAN).

Participants and applicants who need more information can write to the email [email protected], where agency staff will answer your questions.
