Federal judge Juan R. Torruella died this morning at the age of 87 due to a massive heart attack,

Torruella was the first Puerto Rican on the Boston Circuit of Appeals, which he presided from 1994 to 2001.

He was also president of the Federal Court of San Juan from 1982 to 1984.

Torruella was also an outstanding sailing athlete and represented Puerto Rico in four Olympic Games from 1964 to 1976.
