GFR Media journalists stand out in Asppro awards


The Puerto Rico Journalists Association (Asppro) released today the results of the XXVI National Journalism Award .

Among the winners, there are several journalists from GFR Media.

In the category Press / Interview the journalist Nydia Bauzá from Primera Hora, won for her work “Bravery of Adolfina Villanueva” . 40 years after the murder of Adolfina Villanueva, during an eviction in Loíza, the journalist recalled, through the voice of her widower, the event in which a poor black woman, mother of six children, who was trying to defend the piece of land on which his home made of wood and zinc stood. Last year, Bauzá was awarded the "Maritza Díaz Alcaide Special Award" for her journalistic excellence and professional career.

In the category of Press / Chronicle Benjamín Torres Gotay, from El Nuevo Día was awarded for "Los 15 dias" an account of the days prior to the resignation of former governor Ricardo Rosselló. Torres Gotay also received a "Honorable Mention" in the category of Special Report for the work "The last days of cockfighting" . [19659002] For his part, Marcos Billy Guzmán from El Nuevo Día won an award in the category Multimedia / Special Report for “The monumental wall of the silence of the deaf in Puerto Rico ”. This journalistic work portrays one of the great challenges we have as a society to meet the needs of vulnerable communities, especially in crisis situations.

The awarded reports were selected by an independent jury of veteran journalists and university professors from Communications chaired by the veteran journalist and public relations officer Pepo García.

“We invite our colleagues to continue improving themselves every day because their achievements are for Puerto Rico. Asppro will continue its work and distance education in the midst of the current coronavirus emergency. We urge the union to maintain strict precautionary measures against contagion for as long as necessary until the danger of this virus ends, "said Damaris Suárez, president of Asppro, in a written communication.
