Governor Pedro Pierluisi appointed Jesús González Cruz as acting secretary of the Department of Education, after withdrawing the appointment of Elba Aponte.
“Today, I am appointing Mr. Jesús González Cruz as Acting Secretary of the Department of Education. Mr. González Cruz has been serving as Undersecretary of Administration in the Department. It is essential to guarantee the continuity of services and the important work that is carried out. is being carried out by our students, and I am sure that Mr. González will carry out this work with the sense of urgency and responsibility that is required at this time, “the executive said in written statements.
González Cruz graduated from the Pontificia Universidad Católica School of Law in May 2004 and has been admitted to the practice of law since 2005
González Cruz was secretary of the Department of Correction under the government of Luis Fortuño. He also went toadministrator of the Correctional Administration, administrator of the Juvenile Institutions Administration, attorney for Juvenile Affairs (auxiliary prosecutor) of the Puerto Rico Department of Justice, municipal secretary of the Municipality of Arecibo and dExecutive Director of the Commission on Youth Affairs of the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico, among others.
The executive announced that he will continue with the interview processes to make a proprietary appointment and submit it to the Senate.
According to sources THE SPOKESMANThe names of the possible candidates that La Fortaleza considers to officially lead the agency are Iván Benítez Canales, interim special assistant in charge of the Bayamón School District; the former New Progressive Senator Margarita Nolasco; and the regional superintendent of Bayamón, Yanira Raíces. The latter held the position of assistant secretary for Transformation, Planning and Performance under the leadership of the former secretary of the DE, Julia Keleher, and also collaborated in the elaboration of the government plan of the New Progressive Party (PNP).
González Cruz will occupy the agency chair after the Senate filed a negative report on the appointment of Elba Aponte, prompting Pierluisi to withdraw his first appointment of an agency head.
