Governor appoints new Secretary of State


Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced announced today the appointment of attorney Raúl Márquez Hernández as the new Secretary of State.

In a message recorded through the La Fortaleza page and transmitted through Facebook, the First Executive stated that Márquez Hernández will be the replacement for Elmer Román, who recently resigned from his position to accept a new job in Washington DC. Roman’s resignation was effective as of August 23.

“In accordance with the continuity of work and as planned, today I announce the appointment of the new Secretary of State of Puerto Rico, Rául Márquez Hernández. Professional experience in municipalities, the Legislature and in the private sector are part of the important attributes of this young lawyer, ”said the governor.

For his part, Mr. Márquez Hernández -who was a legislative advisor and for a time also a lawyer for the Arecibo municipality under the mandate of Carlos Molina- was grateful for the appointment and took advantage of the moment to make his first expressions to the people.

“I come today with a clear picture… we are experiencing an unprecedented challenge with the issue of the pandemic caused by COVID-19. Our highest priority is the well-being of our people, in particular of our elderly and those who suffer from chronic and sensitive diseases, “said Márquez Hernández in his first message, who must be confirmed by both legislative bodies.

For her part, the governor made her announcement by means of brief expressions in which she did not attend the country’s media. Primera Hora has consistently requested an interview with the Primera Executive but it has not been granted.
