Governor withdraws appointment of Supreme Court judge

The governor Wanda Vazquez Garced withdrew this afternoon the appointment of Maritere Brignoni as an associate judge of the Supreme Court.

The governor’s communication arrived at the edge of 5:30 pm, the deadline that the president of the Senate, Thomas Rivera Schatz, had given the first executive to withdraw the designation or, otherwise, they would proceed to reject it.

“I reaffirm that Lcda. Brignoni Mártir has all the personal and professional qualifications, as well as the necessary merits to occupy such an honorable position. The candidate meets all the requirements and is a proven professional recognized by the legal community. However, with great sadness and for the benefit of the people of Puerto Rico, of the robed profession, for the peace of the lawyer and her family, Lcda. Brignoni Mártir has asked me this afternoon to withdraw his appointment, ”said the governor through written statements.

Brignoni’s confirmation was always uncertain. Since last week it was known that the judge of the Appellate Court did not have the 16 votes she needs to be confirmed. Brignoni had the favor of nine senators, I feel these: Carmelo Ríos, Miguel Romero, William Villafañe, Migdalia Padilla, Luis Daniel Muñiz, Miguel Laureano, Carlos Rodríguez Mateo, Axel “Chino” Roque and Henry Neumann.
