The Secretary of Health, Lorenzo González, today regretted the death of Dr. Benjamín Rodríguez Cotto due to Covid-19.
He was serving as a consulting physician in the Department of Health.
“Today, one of us joins the list of doctors and nurses in our country who lose his life due to Covid-19, leaving an immense void in his family, friends and patients,” he said.
Rodríguez Cotto was also director of the Emergency Room at the Medical Center, in Río Piedras.
“Today Puerto Rico loses Dr. Benjamín Rodríguez Cotto -our dear Bengie-, one of the best human beings with whom I have had the opportunity to share throughout my life. A first-rate public servant, a doctor committed to his profession, but above all a man with an unequaled human quality and a giant heart, “he said in written statements.
He described him as “a mentor to many, now doctors and health experts, who recognized his experience and knowledge.”
“Covid-19 shows us once again that it does not look at the worth of people. It is a virus that can take the lives of those we love, without even giving us the opportunity to say goodbye,” he added.
“We cannot continue to allow this virus to continue snatching more Puerto Ricans … great Puerto Ricans. Winning the battle is in our hands … we are going to unite to defeat it,” he concluded.
Doctors and professionals who worked with him flooded social networks with positive messages about his legacy in medicine.
“How hard it is to lose a person you love so much. Bengie, thank you for receiving me in the Department with so much love and for being my mentor. As you always told me: ‘COVID is serious, my people have to take care of themselves, respect life.’ Thank you champion for everything you gave to the country, “wrote epidemiologist Fabiola Cruz on her social networks.
Five other doctors have died from the virus in Puerto Rico.
