The lands in Puerto Rico are saturated and any rain that falls in the next few hours could cause flooding, so the National Meteorological Service (SNM) in San Juan issued a flood watch for the entire island until Friday night.
Today, a trough will be helping the development of showers, but it is tomorrow when an active tropical wave arrives that stronger downpours could create a flood problem throughout Puerto Rico.
“There is a high risk of flash floods on the local islands, particularly from Thursday afternoon to Friday night. High humidity in the lower levels of the atmosphere, associated with a tropical disturbance now located east of the Lesser Antilles, is expected to combine with an upper level trough to give rise to periods of moderate to heavy rainfall in Puerto Rico and the American Virgin Islands ”, indicates the SNM.
“According to the latest guidance, rains and storms will hit the US Virgin Islands and eastern Puerto Rico on Thursday afternoon, with increasing frequency on Friday morning. Showers and thunderstorms will sweep across the western areas of Puerto Rico at noon on Friday. Rain accumulations expected east of Puerto Rico are expected to range from 2 to 4 inches with larger amounts isolated. In other parts of Puerto Rico and throughout the US Virgin Islands, 1 to 3 inches of rain are possible with larger amounts, ”he adds.
