The Resident Commissioner in Washington, Jenniffer González, spoke out today against the claims made by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, about statehood for Puerto Rico. González drew the president’s attention and assured that it is wrong to say that Puerto Ricans are satisfied with their current status.
“Since 1940 the Republican Party has included Puerto Rico in its statehood platform. The president should comply with it and respect the will of the people of Puerto Rico.”
González said Trump should be consistent with the written commitment he made in 2016 in favor of statehood for Puerto Rico if Puerto Ricans voted in favor.

“The people of Puerto Rico rejected the current colonial state in 2012 and have consistently voted in favor of statehood. It is a mistake to say that we are satisfied with the current state.”
The commissioner invited the president to “clarify” his comments regarding statehood and “acknowledge the Republican platform” that he endorsed.
