SAN JUAN – The candidate for governor for the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP), Juan Dalmau Ramírez, joined on Thursday the call made by various organizations and sectors, to demand the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) to stop the massive destruction and irresponsible of trees in parks under the tutelage of the Puerto Rico National Parks Company.
“It is perverse for the government to take advantage of the fact that at this moment the attention is focused on the electoral campaign, to allow the destruction of hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of trees in the country, seeking to justify the hiring of private companies with recovery funds. They started in Cerro Gordo in Vega Baja, and now they threaten to continue at the Zoo in Mayagüez, the Cavernas del Rio Camuy park, urban parks such as Julio Monagas in Bayamón and a resort such as Monte del Estado in Maricao, according to the information that environmental organizations have offered us ”, explained Dalmau Ramírez in written communication
Under the pretext that the trees felled or in the process of being cut down are sick or injured by the impact of Hurricane Maria three years ago, the DNER has allowed hundreds of healthy trees to have also been destroyed. This has been evidenced by communities and environmental organizations.
According to Dalmau Ramírez, the PNP government takes advantage of the attention in the political campaign to carry out this environmental crime.
“In 2018, they tried through the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP), for which I submitted Joint Resolution 326 for the DNER to stop this fictitious plan. But, as always happens in these red and blue governments, the greed for money and the desire for profit prevails over the protection of the environment and the health of our people. Under my government, the destroyers of trees and the environment will pay the consequences ”, he added.
According to the PIP candidate, efforts should be aimed at reforesting the areas, not deforesting them.
“This harmful vision of ending the environment must be stopped. In my Patria Nueva program, we propose, among other proposals, to develop and implement a “Puerto Rico Reforestation Master Plan” to reforest and manage green areas on government land and properties, as well as to plan the reforestation of cities and communities. surrounding. In the same way, implement the “Trees for my Street” Program to reforest the green curbs of all the urbanizations of the country with annual goals of 25 percent, ”said Dalmau.
