Justice does not rule out filing charges against Félix Verdejo | government

The Secretary of Justice, Domingo Emanuelli, will meet today with the Chief of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Puerto Rico, Stephen Muldrow, to discuss the case against Felix Verdejo for the murder of Keishla Rodríguez Ortiz. He did not rule out charges being filed at the state level.

“We are going to have meetings and we have been meeting. We will continue to analyze the evidence and the elements and in due course we will make the decision. But we are going to keep it confidential, because what we are doing is the result of an investigation that is in process, “said Emanuelli.

During a press conference today, Governor Pedro Pierluisi defended that federal authorities should assume custody and the initial accusation against Verdejo.

“The memorandum of understanding between the Federal Prosecutor’s Office and the Justice Department provides that, in the event of gender violence, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office can enter. In the same way, the federal authorities work in collaboration with gender violence, ”said Pierluisi.

“It is inconsistent who investigates and prosecutes after it is investigated and prosecuted and here there is parallel jurisdiction and the federal authorities are investigating and prosecuting and the state authorities have said that they reserve the right because the crime of murder, the federal authorities do not have jurisdiction” , abounded.

Verdejo slept last night at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) after surrendering to federal authorities.

The charges against him are: kidnapping that resulted in death, carjacking that resulted in death, and killing an unborn child. For each of the charges, he is exposed to life imprisonment, the death penalty, fines of up to $ 250,000 and five years of supervised release.
