San Juan – In the first three months of the new CESCO 2.0, which established a tiered system of appointments to carry out transactions in the Driver Service Centers without the need to queue, some 128,789 people have successfully renewed their driver’s licenses and official IDs from the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP).
This was reported this Monday by the DTOP secretary, engineer Carlos M. Contreras Aponte, while announcing the activation of the appointment system for citizens whose licenses expired in 2018 and 2019.
“As all of Puerto Rico knows, after the measures that had to be taken as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of transactions of licenses, identification and motor vehicles were paralyzed since mid-March, causing the accumulation of these for several months. Given this, on July 1 we inaugurated CESCO 2.0, a program that allowed the thousands of citizens who needed to do some management in the Driver Services Centers to make an appointment and, in a staggered way, they could catch up without the need from standing in line or being exposed to COVID-19, ”explained Contreras Aponte in written statements.
“Since then, by entering cesco.turnospr.com or using the CESCO Digital application, available for free for cell phones with iOS and Android operating systems, thousands of citizens have been able to make appointments not only to quickly renew their licenses and identifications, safe and without lines, but to do other procedures such as transfers, registrations, take driving tests, among others. The success of CESCO 2.0 has been such that in the first 3 months some 128,789 citizens have already renewed their licenses and IDs without having to queue, while thousands more have carried out other procedures under the same conditions, saying goodbye definitively to the ranks of CESCO, ”added the official.
People with expired licenses
As part of the phased system to renew licenses and identifications expired after the government shutdown, as a result of the pandemic, a calendar of extension of their validity and requests for dates to be able to renew was established.
As of July 1, the TurnosPR system allowed people with expired licenses and IDs from January to March to get their renewal appointments. On July 15 the option was opened for those that expired in April and May, while on August 1 it was made for those that expired in June and July, and so on.
“Currently, all citizens with licenses expired in 2020 can request their renewal appointment through cesco.turnospr.com or CESCO Digital, and today I am pleased to report that, after exceeding our expectations in terms of successful renewals in just 3 months , we have activated the system so that those citizens with licenses expired in 2018 and 2019 can also do so, ”informed the secretary.
It should be noted that licenses expired in July and July remain in force until October 31.
Those expired in August and September are valid until November 30, while those that expire in October and November will be valid until December 31 and, finally, those that expire in December will be valid until January 31, 2021.
