Saint Juan – The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation of Puerto Rico was selected as the winning organization of the Inspiration Award 2020 of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in the United States.
The Foundation was selected from a group consisting of more than 170 stories of tenacity, perseverance and passion. The history of the Puerto Rico Multiple Sclerosis Foundation and its contributions to the MS movement impacted the selection committee.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and optic nerve), which can lead to disability. The prevalence of multiple sclerosis in Puerto Rico has placed the island on a map of the epidemiology of the disease, which reflects that every week 2 to 3 new cases are diagnosed on the island.
“It is with great humility but great satisfaction that we receive the Inspiration Award 2020. We are honored and happy to receive this award that testifies to the enormous effort we have always put into achieving the well-being of our patients. For us, they come first, ”said Lourdes Fernández, executive director of the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation of Puerto Rico.
With the motto Together, Embracing Life! The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation of Puerto Rico is aimed at the well-being of patients living with this condition on the Island. The organization has been characterized by being active in initiatives that contribute to the MS population in Puerto Rico, which is estimated at 4,000 – 5,000 patients. Among these, the organization offers educational talks, conferences, forums, and maintains active support groups that seek to inform and educate about the condition, in order to ensure a better quality of life for patients and their families.
