Néstor Alonso took half the salary he gave an employee, according to a federal indictment

SAN JUAN – A federal grand jury issued 9 indictments against the representative of the New Progressive Party (PNP), Nestor Alonso-Vega, for his alleged participation in a scheme of robbery, bribery and ‘kikcbacks’, federal prosecutor W. Stephen Muldrow reported Thursday .

“Public corruption constitutes a threat to our democratic institutions, and erodes trust in the government, the federal prosecutor said at a press conference.

According to the indictment, the alleged scheme – which includes federal funds – occurred between February 2018 and September 2020. Supposedly, Alonso-Vega authorized several salary adjustments to employees of his legislative office. The increase was from $ 760 to $ 1,442 biweekly. Then it was increased for the month of May to $ 2,043. However, in July 2018 it was reduced to $ 1,417, as a result of a budget reduction in his office.

Then, for October 2019, his biweekly salary was increased ٙ again to $ 2,270 and held until July 2020.

Of that inflated salary, Alonso Vega was supposed to receive half of the increase that was divided into paydays.

Supposedly, the person used various ways to transfer the money to Alonso-Vega. For example, it used ATH Móvil; some payments to an account that Alonso Vega had in the Home Depot chain and payments in cash.

If found guilty, he is exposed between 10 to 20 years in prison.
