The commissioner of the Bureau for Emergency Management and Disaster Administration (Nmead), Nino Correa Filomeno, reminded the public that this coming Thursday the exercise “Gran Shak eout Puerto Rico 2020 ″ will take place.
“It is important that citizens take into account the importance of participating in this type of exercise and, from their home or workplace, practice their emergency plans to learn about their vulnerabilities and the arrangements they must make in their homes to prevent damage to life and property in the event of an earthquake, “said the official.
He added that “we must not lose perspective that Puerto Rico is in an area of high seismic activity and we have recently been affected by earthquakes around the island.”
Correa Filomeno stressed that municipalities have the option of using the tsunami warning sirens that are found on their coasts.
“We encourage each person to talk with their family, especially with children, the elderly and people with health conditions, about the possibility of hearing the sirens and that they are clear that it is a drill. In the same way, they must take into account that a message will be broadcast through the EAS, a system that interrupts radio and television programming ”, the commissioner explained.
