PEÑUELAS – Peñuelas activists against the ashes and the burning of coal, warned the newly elected governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia, that the communities will continue to fight to remove the AES company from the island.
“Pierluisi was a lobbyist for the AES company in the state legislature, where he tried unsuccessfully to not approve the bill that definitively prohibited the deposit of toxic ash in the country. The project was signed and converted into Law 5-2020 on January 2 of this year. But now, AES will be sitting in the chair of Fortaleza through its lobbyist and we want them to know that we are not afraid, ”said Yanina Moreno Febres Pérez, spokesperson for the Camp Against Ashes in Peñuelas in written communication.
For his part, community leader Jimmy Borrero Costas said that the communities are ready to continue the battle head-on against the AES and the government.
“Take the message to Pierluisi: if it occurs to him to reverse Law 5 to benefit his clients, let him know that what happened to Ricardo Rosselló is going to fall short,” he said.
“On behalf of the people who have died from the coal ash; of people who have become ill from respiratory conditions and cancer; of the aquifers, air and sea that they have polluted; Let Pedro Pierluisi know that we are going to inaugurate it, taking him at any time and wherever it is, the message that the coal plant must be closed and that AES company will never contract with the government again. To the governor and the president of AES, see you on the street! ”He added.
The expressions of the leaders of Peñuelas were given during the public hearings that the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) held to evaluate the regulations on the prohibition of the deposit and disposal of ashes in Puerto Rico.
Víctor Alvarado Guzmán, spokesman for the Salinas Environmental Dialogue Committee, criticized the delay by the DNER in approving these regulations.
“Not only have they been violating the Law for 7 months, since they had until April 2 to approve the regulations, but they also call these hearings two days after the elections. We hope that the regulations will be approved before the end of the year. We cannot leave this matter in the hands of lobbyist Pierluisi, as he has a serious conflict of interest. We have already proposed our amendments to the regulations, now to continue on the street, because the true majority is on the street, ”said Alvarado.
Alvarado explained that “the fight against the AES company will continue until the coal plant is closed; the places where the toxic ashes have been deposited are monitored, the AES is forced to assume its responsibility for the damage to health and the poisoning of the environment; and the company is definitively removed from Puerto Rico ”.
