Puerto Rico – Researchers from the Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) are looking for workers who work in health centers to participate in a study that will examine the emotional well-being and mental health of this group of first-class workers line in Puerto Rico, during and after the COVID19 pandemic.
The study titled in English: The Covid-19 HEalth caRe wOrkErS (HEROES) Study:Its purpose is to know the impact of this pandemic on the emotional well-being and mental health of front-line personnel, including professionals in medicine, nursing, radiology, administration, cleaning personnel, among others.
“This project, led by Columbia University in the USA and the University of Chile, is an international effort of over 25 countries around the world. These health workers are part of a particularly important group who face constant risk due to the type of tasks they perform. But in addition to this, they now find themselves with multiple changes in their tasks, more hours of work and on many occasions with poor institutional support. All of this can have an impact on the emotional health of this population. So our interest is to understand what your emotional health is in the short, medium and long term. ” said Dr. Eliut Rivera-Segarra, principal investigator in Puerto Rico.
“Obviously, the case of Puerto Rico is a very particular one where other stressors such as past hurricanes and earthquakes must be taken into consideration, but above all the country’s socio-political crisis that continues to affect how we respond to these emergencies,” said the also a clinical psychologist and assistant professor at Ponce Health Sciences University.

Dr. Rivera Segarra explained that those who decide to participate will only have to answer the online questionnaire and then complete it again after 3, 6 and 12 months.
