SAN JUAN – The Commissioner of the Police Bureau, Henry Escalera Rivera, reported on Monday that a work plan will be implemented in the municipality of Hatillo to avoid incidents related to the so-called mask runs.
“Historically, the town of Hatillo has a tradition of celebrating the Festival of Masks on December 28 of each year. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, festivals of this nature have been suspended in accordance with the provisions of Executive Order 2020-087 and the provisions of the Institute of Culture to safeguard health. Despite this determination, we have seen a movement on social media that intends to go out on the streets in floats and other vehicles traditionally used for the holiday. For this reason, the Arecibo police area has outlined a specific work plan to address this situation, avoid crowding and unauthorized activities that put public safety at risk, ”Escalera Rivera explained in written communication. .
For his part, Lieutenant Colonel José Rosario Polanco, Arecibo area commander, explained that the plan runs from December 26 to 28 and will have the participation of different divisions of the Police.
“The work initiative has been developed so that personnel from the districts, precincts, Stolen Vehicle Divisions, Highway Patrols, Drugs and Tactical Operations, as well as the Motorized and Canine Units, in conjunction with the Criminal Investigations Corps, work in unison to guarantee the safety of citizens and that access to public roads is not affected by people who travel in floats and other vehicles in the middle of an event that is prohibited according to the measures established to prevent COVID-19. Any person who decides to carry out activities related to the cultural festival that was suspended, would incur violations of Executive Order 2020-087, and could violate the provisions of Law 22 of Traffic, Law 8 of Vehicle Property and the Code of Public Order Municipal, ”said Rosario Polanco.
Officials were emphatic in mentioning that violations of the aforementioned laws can lead to fines ranging from 50 to 5,000 dollars or the confiscation of the vehicle. In addition, they stressed that any person who is intervened for violation of these laws will be sanctioned according to the established parameters.
