Police investigate alleged extortion in the Fire Department Bureau

San Juan – The Police reported on Wednesday about an alleged extortion that was reported at 4:00 in the afternoon, in the Bureau of the Puerto Rico Fire Department on Loíza Street in Puntas Las Marías in Santurce.

“We have reported to the Police Bureau that the Fire Department’s systems are compromised after an outsider had access to it and requested money in exchange for the return of the accesses. The IT staff of the Bureau in conjunction with the Department of Public Safety works to correct the situation together with the corresponding authorities. It is important to mention that the response to emergencies remains unchanged and we continue to attend to the situations that are reported. We urge any citizen who has an emergency to call 9-1-1 ”, said the commissioner of the Fire Department, Alberto Cruz Albarrán in written communication.

According to the police report, the alleged extortion was received by email that indicated that “hackers” had encrypted the database servers that belong to the Puerto Rico Fire Department Bureau and were requesting in exchange for obtaining the database. data back about $ 600,000.

Agents assigned to the Property Unit of the Criminal Investigations Corps (CIC) jointly with the San Juan Cyber ​​Crimes Division took charge of the investigation.
