MAYAGÜEZ – Doctor Eduardo Ortiz Rivera, professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Mayagüez University Campus (RUM) of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), received three prestigious international recognitions that highlight the excellence of his professional and investigative career, it was reported this Tuesday.
The IEEE Power and Society (PES) organization named him Distinguished Lecturer, as well as a member of the Winter 2020-2021 class of the Faculty Fellowship Program in Israel. Similarly, the International Organization for Inclusion and Educational Quality (OIICE) awarded him the Award for Educational Excellence Cusco Edition. That same entity conferred the honorary degrees Doctor Honoris Causa and Orden Dorada Magisterial, in Cusco, Peru, edition of 2021.
Ortiz Rivera is the first RUM teacher to obtain the distinction of PES, the largest professional technical organization in the world for the development and advances in technology. As a distinguished lecturer, you join expert peers in a program that delivers keynote talks both in person and at distance. He also represents for the first time the Faculty of Engineering in the Faculty Fellowship Program in Israel.
On the other hand, the OIICE, based in Peru, recognizes the dedicated work and effort of successful international education professionals and academic training institutions.
“I am very grateful and honored to receive these prestigious international awards. As a schoolboy and from Barranquilla, I feel very proud to put the School and Puerto Rico on high. I must thank the support of my research group Minds2CREATE Research Team that have been a fundamental part of my professional achievements, and that, in addition, celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this year, as a model of excellence in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. My team has been a pillar for our department in the development of professionals and doctors in engineering, especially in areas such as renewable energy, robotics and aerospace, ”said Dr. Ortiz Rivera in a written communication.
Added to the list of his achievements is the recent approval of the Consortium of Hybrid Resilient Energy Systems (CHRES) project led by the professor at the RUM, together with the collaboration of the United States national laboratories: Sandia National Laboratory, National Energy Technology Laboratory , Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and institutions of higher education: University of Texas, El Paso, University of New Mexico and in Puerto Rico, the Ana G. Méndez System, the leading institution of the consortium.
Dr. Ortiz Rivera obtained his baccalaureate at the Mayaguez campus of the UPR in 2000, and his master’s and doctorate degrees from Michigan State University in 2002 and 2006. His areas of interest include: renewable energy and electronic power systems, among others. His resume also highlights other awards and distinctions, as well as work experience in prestigious laboratories and universities in the United States. He has published more than 100 refereed articles in professional engineering and education journals and conferences.
For his part, the president of the UPR, Dr. Jorge Haddock, celebrated the professor’s achievement and highlighted his great contribution to academia, engineering and research.

Likewise, the rector of the RUM, Dr. Agustín Rullán Toro, congratulated the professor for these recognitions that place the ambassador of the RUM and the institution in an advanced research and educational center.

The distinctions that have been conferred on him show the education of excellence that our University offers and how our talents return to the institution that seed of knowledge received, through the maximum performance of their careers and the well-being of future professionals in the country ”, he specified Rullán Toro.
