WASHINGTON DC – Congressman Darren Soto (D-FL) presented on Tuesday, together with Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón and Governor Pedro Rafael Pierluisi Urrutia, an act of admission of Puerto Rico as a state of the United States.

However, CyberNews questioned the support that this measure could receive when the spokesman for the Democratic Majority, Chuck Schummer (D-NY) does not support the inclusion of Puerto Rico as a state.

“Statehood is not a matter for a single person or a single congressman. Statehood is a matter of respecting the will of the People of Puerto Rico, ”González Colón said at a press conference.

“There were territories that made plebiscites without the endorsement of Congress, the White House or the court and still they succeeded,” he added.

This admission act establishes a work plan and that the congress ratifies with its vote the admission of Puerto Rico to the state of the union and that it has the same equality of conditions as the other states of the American union.

For his part, Governor Pedro Pierluisi said: “I know the Speaker of the House very well. For the year 2010, I presented the HR-900 that called for a plebiscite in Puerto Rico, endorsed by Congress. Although he never publicly supported the project, he allowed it and it was voted on in the House. That can happen again ”.

“It seems incredible that there are people who question that a majority chose statehood. I know that sooner rather than later they will give the light of day to the statehood bill for Puerto Rico, both in the House and in the Senate, “he added.

Congressman Soto announced that the measure has 51 co-sponsors in the federal Chamber, 36 Democrats and 14 Republicans.
