The Senate confirmed Ramón González as Secretary of Agriculture on Monday.
The president of the Senate, José Luis Dalmau, in a round of debate, highlighted González’s origin as a farmer and who has been favored by his peers to occupy the position.
He added that the secretary knows Agriculture “from top to bottom.”
The senators of the Victoria Ciudadana Movement and the Puerto Rican Independence Party, Ana Irma Rivera Lassén and María de Lourdes Santiago, respectively, voted against the nominee.
In the case of Santiago, the senator questioned the position shown by González during the confirmation hearings regarding the defense of agricultural land as well as the use of pesticides as the “round up.”
He also denounced the alleged insensitivity of the new secretary in relation to the low salary of agricultural workers.
