Secretary of Health appoints Yonaica Plaza director of Smicrc | government

The designated secretary of the Department of Health, Carlos Mellado, appointed Dr. Yonaica Plaza Santiago as director of the Municipal System of Investigation of Cases and Tracing of Contacts of Puerto Rico (Smicrc), after the resignation last month of the epidemiologist Fabiola Cruz.

Plaza Santiago is currently the epidemiologist of the Jayuya municipality under the Smicrc program attached to Health.

“The work carried out by the Municipal Health System has to continue and after an exhaustive but urgent evaluation, without a doubt, Dr. Plaza is the ideal person to mitigate the effects of this virus and thus optimize public health. of the citizenship ”, pointed out Mellado.

Plaza Santiago is a graduate of the Ponce Health Sciences Unviersity, recognized for its educational quality, community services and achievements in different investigations, without exception of the current health emergency that the Island is experiencing due to covid-19.

“I have always worked for the welfare of the populations. In addition to being an epidemiologist, I am a health worker and educator in school health. I have always worked in promoting disease prevention. I come with great courage to give continuity to the municipal tracking system and to meet the needs of our populations. I appreciate the recommendation of Fabiola Cruz to lead the efforts and of the Secretary of Health for believing in my work ”, declared the epidemiologist.

Plaza Santiago started the new commission today. In the first days, it will be immersed in the transition process so that the ongoing monitoring and investigation on the cases of covid-19 on the Island are not affected.
