1. Nominated to the Supreme Court
US President Donald Trump nominated Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court on Saturday, a decision that crowns a drastic reorganization of the judiciary that will resonate for a generation. Barret, former secretary to the late Justice Antonin Scalia, said she was “truly honored” by the nomination and aligned herself with Scalia’s conservative legal approach by stating that his “judicial philosophy is mine as well.”
2. Businesses close for violating executive order
The director of the Office of Investigations of the Department of Health, Jesús Hernández, ordered the closure of several establishments for violations of the executive order that establishes protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The businesses closed were: Kantares Rest Bar and Grill, on Isla Verde Avenue, Sabrina, in Santurce, and the Costco store in Plaza Escorial, in Carolina. In addition, the Colmado Rivera, The New Pollerin and La Cueva del Mojito, all in Hatillo.
3. The island keeps shaking
Several earthquakes shook the western area of the island over the weekend. On Saturday there were about 14 tremors with magnitudes between 2.5 and 3.6. While on Sunday the ground moved 12 times. The largest movement recorded was of magnitude 4.1 at 12:28 am in the La Parguera area in Lajas.
4. Receive historical scholarship
Stephanie Silvagnoly, from the El Tuque neighborhood in Ponce, made history by becoming the first Puerto Rican to be selected at the United States level to receive a full scholarship from the Army to study optometry. “For me, it was always a dream to be a doctor, but I did not know how I was going to achieve it,” said the Ponceña in written statements. A graduate of the Jardines de Ponce High School, Silvagnoly decided to join the Army Reserve “in search of opportunities for professional and personal development.”
