The Secretary of the Department of Health, Carlos Mellado, warned that both residents and visitors in Puerto Rico should continue to use masks, in reaction to the flexibility announced earlier by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“I remain firm in my position, we must continue to use the mask to protect ourselves from covid-19 and prevent infections, both residents and visitors in Puerto Rico. This is not the time to be flexible, it is time to be firm and strict to end this pandemic, “said Mellado in written statements.
CDC today eased the use of masks on fully vaccinated people, both indoors and outdoors.
“Anyone who is fully vaccinated can participate in indoor and outdoor activities, large or small, without wearing a mask or physically distancing themselves,” said the CDC director, Rochelle Walensky, during a White House briefing.
The new guidelines maintain the use of masks indoors such as buses, airplanes, hospitals, prisons and homeless shelters. The CDC announcement paves the way for the reopening of workplaces, schools and other spaces.
“My exhortation will be to keep using the mask, physical distancing, and recurring hand washing. and let us continue to respect the safety and health protocols as we have done so far ”, added Mellado.
The newly confirmed head of Health highlighted that Puerto Rico continues to advance in the vaccination process against covid-19. He indicated that the agency will strengthen its strategies to vaccinate young people, after the vaccination of minors between 12 and 15 years of age was authorized.
At the moment, more than 2.3 million doses have been administered on the islandMellado reported.
