The tremors force to close the main refuge of Guánica




The main municipal refuge building in Guánica can no longer be used for these purposes due to the damage caused by the tremors that occurred yesterday in the southwest of the country.

The mayor of Guánica, Santos "Papichy" Seda reported that although the earthquakes of 4.8 and 4.37 were initially not thought to have caused structural damage the picture changed in hours of yesterday afternoon.

Two earthquakes of magnitude 4.8 and 4.37, with just three minutes of separation

The Puerto Rico Seismic Network registered the epicenter of both events in the southeast tip of the Municipality of Guánica.

After the first few hours no damage was known, but before the damage was found in the coliseum, during the day there were also reports from citizens about damage.

"We were receiving calls from people who have seen new damage in their homes, which we have already referred to the Recovery and Disaster Center, "he said.

According to the Puerto Rico Seismic Network, after the two tremors yesterday a total of 23 have been registered until this morning "significant" aftershocks with two of 4.5 and 4.3 being the most significant.

These tremors are the most recent in a series of telluric movements that began in December 2019 and that have mainly affected the municipalities of the south and southwest areas. Meanwhile, on January 6, a tremor of magnitude 5.8 was recorded followed by an earthquake of magnitude 6.4 on the morning of January 7 .

The tremors have caused damages estimated at $ 8.3 billion according to the first estimate presented by the Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced to the federal government.
