They request the Secretary of Correction to address the situation in the Guayama prison

The representative for District 19 of Mayagüez and San Germán Maricarmen Mas Rodríguez, requested the secretary of the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DCR), Eduardo Rivera Juanatey, to promptly address the complaints of the inmates living in Annex 296, of the Guayama Correctional Complex, and those who have been in their forties for 13 days, locked in their cells, because a custodial guard tested positive for COVID-19.

“We understand that the correctional system has tried to handle the COVID-19 problem with its best available tools, but there are particular situations that have to be dealt with in a hurry and one of them are the complaints that inmates have in Annex 296 of Maximum Security in Guayama. In the past few days we have seen how family and friends of these inmates have taken to social networks to express their concerns, among which the fear they feel of being infected with COVID-19 through custodial officials stands out, because, as indicated, there are inmates with complicated clinical pictures in this area who could suffer even more from the ravages of this virus. Our call is for this problem to be dealt with expeditiously, ”Mas Rodríguez commented in written statements.

According to the Representative, affiliated with the New Progressive Party (PNP), the inmates allege that in building number 6, of the aforementioned annex, all inmates were placed in isolation on August 18 because a correctional officer tested positive for COVID- 19.

The DCR carried out the molecular tests on the inmates of that area and they still have not received the results of the same.

“The inmates allege that they were immediately quarantined, due to contact with the officer who tested positive, but that other correctional officers who had contact with him were not isolated and that they even continue to work in the same prison facility. . Our interest is that this complaint be evaluated and the corresponding measures taken, if any were necessary. The health of the custodial officers as well as the correctional population must be guaranteed ”, concluded the also president of the Commission for the Integrated Development of the West Region.
