UHS is accredited by the Middle States

The Rio Piedras Campus High School of the University of Puerto Rico (traditionally known as UHS) has just received the coveted accreditation from the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS), to become the first school public of the country to receive such an important distinction.

This recognition is the fruit of the academic evidence shown to the MSA-CESS commissioners by the evaluation team that – between March 3 and 6 – visited the school.

In the words of Dr. Lisa Marie McCauley, president of the MSA-CESS, “Accreditation is the gold standard for measuring and promoting school achievement.”

With this accreditation, our Secondary School endorses the academic quality that has been its hallmark throughout its long history, developed from 1913 -with the name of High School- and that from the 1948-1949 school year formally became in middle school and high school to integrate High School.

Luis Ferrao, rector of the Rio Piedras campus of the UPR, asserted that “this tradition of excellence -which is well known to all- has in the decision of the MSA-CESS a reliable testimony that -without a doubt- should stimulate us all to continue working tirelessly in the formation of that youth who will soon begin higher studies to continue forging that sap in which our country’s hopes for a better future are based.

“On behalf of our vast university community -and on my own- the most effusive congratulations to all the people who had to do with this achievement, especially to the team led by Dr. Mayra Chárriez -dean of the Faculty of Education- as well as the faculty, non-teaching staff, parents and students of the High School, our famous and beloved UHS ”, added Dr. Ferrao.

For his part, the president of the UPR, Jorge Haddock, highlighted the importance of this achievement for the institution and for Puerto Rico. “This feat reaffirms the excellence that distinguishes the High School of the Río Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico and the great work carried out by all the staff of the Faculty of Education in the training of talented students who represent a promising future for our island. The accreditation process is a rigorous one that defines, maintains, and promotes educational excellence, as well as continuous improvement in all areas of our University. The degree earned by a student at an accredited institution is invaluable. We congratulate Dr. Mayra Chárriez and her team, as well as the rector, Dr. Luis Ferrao. Today we celebrate, along with the entire university community, this great achievement that demonstrates the commitment to the development of the present and future leaders of Puerto Rico, ”said Haddock.

“I am more than satisfied and honored with the achievement obtained, since we are the first public high school in Puerto Rico to be accredited by the MSA-CESS,” said Dr. Mayra Chárriez, dean of the Faculty of Education of the Río Piedras Campus of the UPR. “It is our interest to obtain all the corresponding accreditations to continue strengthening the educational management of our Faculty and of the UHS. I thank all the members of the UHS for a job so well done that has allowed us to obtain such important recognition ”.
