San Juan – The Jacksonville District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) awarded a construction contract for the Río Antón Ruíz project, part of Section 1135 of the Continuing Authorities Program in Humacao.
The contract was awarded on September 20 to the company Caguas-based Advantix Engineering Corporation.
The purpose of the project is to create a permanent solution to reduce saltwater intrusion in the Humacao Nature Reserve.
The work includes the installation of two spillways built in sheet piles with a concrete top, which will be located in the same place where temporary structures had previously been installed for the same purpose.
The structures will be clad in stone at the base and around the ends to protect them from erosion. Construction is anticipated to begin in November 2020.
The cost of this contract is shared between USACE and the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, in accordance with the Amendment of the Project Partnership Agreement between the two agencies.
