Vaccination of older adults in aegids begins | Present

The Department of Health will begin today the process of vaccination against Covid-19 for residents in the aegis in an effort to stop the infections in the most vulnerable population and achieve the vaccination of the population of the elderly.

The new vaccination mission will be in charge of a team of soldiers from the National Guard of Puerto Rico (GNPR).

The initiative, which is projected to end in March, will serve 178 aegis throughout the island, specifically in 75 centers in the north, 37 in the east, 36 in the south and 30 in the west. Aegis are not part of the federal program serving long-term care facilities in the states and territories.

“Our older adults are important and we are not going to rest until each one is vaccinated. We would like to see all of them at the same time, but the number of vaccines available is limited. So we are distributing the vaccine equitably and taking into consideration the population density and the incidence of positive results. Today we begin the first aegis and we hope that the number of vaccines we receive will be tripled to increase our vaccination efforts, ”said the Secretary of the Department of Health, Carlos Mellado López.

For his part, the general adjutant, Major General José J. Reyes, established that in order to fulfill the mission of vaccination of the aegids, the GNPR has divided the distribution and administration of the vaccine in the four cardinal points through the “Task Force” North, South, East and West.

“In this way, our soldiers will be able to reach all the identified aegis and get their residents vaccinated while Walgreens will be able to dedicate itself to long-term care centers and those other aegis that have already contacted or started the process,” said Reyes.

On the other hand, the Department of Health continues its vaccination efforts to attend to the participants in the intellectual disability centers, whose number is already around 631 vaccinated. Likewise, the vaccination process for bedridden patients, of which 532 people have been treated. At the same time, the process of vaccination of health professionals, emergency responders; state, municipal and federal, the vaccination of teachers and the elderly population in the various initiatives that are being carried out. To date, 339,000 vaccines have been distributed in Puerto Rico.
