World Rheumatoid Arthritis Day

Every October 12, since 1996, Rheumatoid Arthritis Day is celebrated worldwide, date that institutionalized Arthritis Rheumatism International.

The goal of this organization was to educate people about rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases and to promote a better quality of life and treatments for those who suffer from them.

Currently it is estimated that a quarter of the population suffers from rheumatic or musculoskeletal diseases, and this incidence does not seem to want to disappear but on the contrary is increasing.

Rheumatic diseases are those that affect the bones, joints, muscles and everything that gives the human body mobility.

The vast majority are of unknown origin, because although cases can occur within the same family, this type of disease is not hereditary, although it has been shown that in industrialized countries there are usually a greater number of cases than in those with a less developed industrial park.

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of these diseases and is characterized by inflammation of the joints, it is chronic, that is, it gets worse over time and causes great pain and loss of mobility for the patient.

Symptoms and Treatment

There is no such picture of symptoms, but in general the first joints that tend to swell and lose mobility are those of the extremities, more specifically the hands and feet, but over time it can also compromise elbows and knees in there are even those who feel the effects at the level of the spine.

Although currently it is still unknown what causes this type of disease, it is clear that in most cases the immune system plays a fundamental role.

In the human body, this system is in charge of defending us against foreign organisms, viruses and parasites, but in people with some type of rheumatism or arthritis, the immune system can stop recognizing certain tissues, destroying them and causing disease.

The treatment recommended by doctors is as follows:

  • Rest the joints from 8 to 10 hours at night for a half to 1 hour during noon.
  • Do regular exercises to maintain joint strength and mobility.
  • Treatment for pain and inflammation does not stop the disease but reduces discomfort.
  • Disease-modifying treatment, these are drugs that do slow the progression of arthritis, but if they are stopped ingesting it progresses more aggressively.
